A Record Season with Roul-Roul Partridges: Nearly 80 Chicks Raised
There are seasons you hope for, and then there are seasons that completely exceed your expectations.
This year has been one of those years at Dinky Creek Feather Farm.
As we continue counting chicks, we’re approaching an incredible milestone of nearly 80 Roul-Roul Partridge chicks successfully raised this season. To say we’re excited would be an understatement. Every hatch represents months—sometimes years—of planning, learning, improving, and a little bit of luck.
For us, this isn’t just about numbers.
It’s about proving that with dedication, patience, and an unwavering commitment to husbandry, these remarkable birds can continue to thrive in responsible aviculture.
A Species Worth Celebrating
The Roul-Roul Partridge (Rollulus rouloul), also known as the Crested Partridge, is one of the most striking galliform species in the world. Native to the forests of Southeast Asia, they’re admired for their incredible appearance, unique behaviors, and strong pair bonds.
The males are unmistakable with their brilliant black to green plumage, vivid red legs, white crest shield, and signature crimson red crest. Females are equally beautiful with their rich green plumage that allows them to blend seamlessly into their forest surroundings.
They’re a species that captivates nearly everyone who sees them for the first time.
Every Chick Represents Countless Hours
People often see a photo of fluffy chicks or a video of healthy birds and assume breeding them is easy.
The reality is very different.
Behind every successful hatch are countless hours spent collecting eggs, monitoring breeding pairs, maintaining ideal nutrition, keeping enclosures in peak condition, carefully incubating eggs, monitoring humidity and temperature, and providing around-the-clock care for newly hatched chicks.
There are early mornings.
Late nights.
Equipment checks.
Record keeping.
Constant observation.
And plenty of moments where experience makes all the difference.
Success in aviculture rarely happens by accident.
Learning Something New Every Season
One of the things we love most about keeping birds is that they never stop teaching us.
Every breeding season provides new lessons. Small adjustments in diet, enclosure design, incubation practices, or chick management can make meaningful differences over time.
This record season wasn’t built overnight.
It’s the result of continually refining our practices year after year and always looking for ways to improve the welfare and success of our birds.
The birds deserve nothing less.
Why Numbers Matter
While we’re incredibly proud to be approaching 80 chicks, the number itself isn’t the most important part.
What matters is what those birds represent.
Every healthy chick strengthens the captive population of this remarkable species and helps ensure quality bloodlines remain available to responsible aviculturists. Healthy breeding populations reduce pressure on wild birds while allowing future generations to experience and appreciate one of nature’s most extraordinary game birds.
Responsible aviculture plays an important role in conservation awareness, education, and preserving species that may one day need the support of healthy captive populations.
Looking Ahead
We’re incredibly thankful for everyone who has followed along this journey—whether you’ve been here since the beginning or just recently discovered Dinky Creek Feather Farm.
Your encouragement, questions, and enthusiasm make sharing these milestones even more rewarding.
As proud as we are of this season, we’re already looking ahead.
There’s always another improvement to make.
Another lesson to learn.
Another generation to raise even better than the last.
That’s the mindset that keeps moving aviculture forward.
Here’s to an unforgettable season, and to nearly 80 healthy Roul-Roul Partridge chicks that represent countless hours of dedication, passion, and hope for the future.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
